Can a phone game really tell a good story?
People love to say mobile games can't do narrative. I used to half-agree, until I started paying attention to the ones that work with the format instead of against it. A phone story has to survive interruptions — a notification, a stop coming up, a kid yelling. The best ones are built in chapters you can actually digest.
Branching dialogue works especially well here because it's low-commitment and high-payoff. You make a choice, you see a reaction, and you feel the story bend. It doesn't need a cinematic budget to land.
What doesn't work is the fifteen-minute cutscene you can't skip. On a phone that's a punishment, not a reward. The games that get this write short, sharp scenes and trust you to fill in the gaps.
My takeaway after a lot of installs: mobile storytelling isn't worse, it's just different. Judge it on whether it respects the way you actually play, not on whether it looks like a blockbuster.
