Why I keep coming back to turn-based strategy on mobile

Why I keep coming back to turn-based strategy on mobile

Strategy games and phones sound like a bad pairing until you try a well-made one. Turn-based design removes the twitch factor, so you're never fighting the touchscreen for reflexes you don't have. You tap, you think, you tap again.

Iron Tide Command is my current obsession. The hex grid makes every move a small puzzle, and because there's no timer, I can set it down mid-turn and come back an hour later without losing the thread. That's exactly the flexibility mobile should offer.

The trick with these games is managing session length. A full match can run twenty minutes or more, so I treat them as my commute games rather than my coffee-line games. Pick the right moment and they're fantastic.

If you've written off mobile strategy because of some free-to-play base builder, give a proper turn-based title a shot. It's a different genre entirely, and a much better one.
